Aviation Security
TSA (Transportation Security Administration) is a crucial part of the security of the way America travels. Multiple layers of security are implemented now due to past occurrences. Every precaution has been set to mitigate anything detrimental to American society. The emerging threat right now is most definitely an insider threat. In aviation security, there is something TSA calls "Known Crew Member". KCM is where someone such as a pilot or flight attendant is granted the privilege to not be screened or their belongings (Known Crewmember Program Reaches 100 Million Crewmembers Cleared Milestone |Transportation Security Administration, 2018). This allows KCM members to take what they please into the airline terminal as well as any aircraft. My recommendation would be to make every person, crew member or not, be screened as well as their personal items. Although KCM makes the airline industry less congested while going through TSA, I believe the risk factor of having people not screened outweighs the delayed lines while having to go through security.

Cierra, I enjoyed your blog about the concerns of KCM security threats within the larger TSA security screening. My current job requires me to travel extensively and as a frequent flyer in commercial airports I often see crew members breeze through security. I think it is a good idea to allow crew a more streamline entry to ensure timely departures, but was not aware that they were not subject to screening as you mentioned which is a concern. As you suggested they should have some security screening and I wonder if TSA could leverage emerging tech as a "test trial" with KCM since the risks are lower before eventually implementing AI into passenger screening? Thanks for bringing this security issue to light.
ReplyDeleteCierra, I have to disagree with having everyone screened. We have background checks and other screenings that these crew members have to go through in order to have their jobs. Having a few friends who are aircraft crew members and their situation of almost living out of a suitcase for weeks at at time. This one small thing can help to make the job at least more tolerable.
